Houston Native and Art Collector Beyoncé
Anyone else with a serious Beyoncé obsession?? Houston native Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z have amassed an important collection of Black art and the new visual album recently released on Disney Plus, Black is King, highlights some of Contemporary Art’s best. Derrick Adams’ series ‘Beauty Work’ celebrating Black hair culture and figurative sculptures by Woodrow Nash adorn a hallway in Mood4Eva, while other scenes cinematically evoke David Hammons, Julie Dash, Deana Lawson and Carrie Mae Weems. Beyoncés own braided crown channels feminist artist Laetitia Ky while her half painted body calls to mind Ethiopian photographer Aïda Muluneh. The film was crafted by 8 directors, 3 co-directors, 5 writers, 4 editors, 12 cinematographers (capturing locations from both Africa and North America), 4 production designers, 2 costume designers, 8 composers and a long list of celebrity cameos - it has been met with both lavish praise and deep criticism but the New York Times has 6 critics discuss.
